Chance UK calls for common sense child protection

Children’s charity Chance UK has responded to Esther Rantzen’s recent statements that today’s children are the victims of “senseless over-protection which pretends to see danger where there is none”

Chance UK mentors work with children from disadvantaged backgrounds at risk of developing criminal or anti-social behaviour. Its mentors are trained in best practice of safeguarding children and are aware of the boundaries of their role, but are encouraged to use physical contact with the children in safe, sensible and positive ways.

CEO of Chance UK, Gracia McGrath, said, “We agree that over-protection of children is unhelpful in most cases. Our children develop positive, close relationships with their mentors, and this would not be possible if we forbade physical contact.”

Chance UK mentors are encouraged to hold their child’s hand as they cross the street, high five to celebrate the child’s achievements, and even hug to show affection.

“We also agree that there is little sense in protecting children from losing competitive games”, said Gracia. “Our games nights are very popular, and the ability to lose in a calm and rational way is one important skill that our children take away from them.”

All Chance UK mentors go through a rigorous selection procedure, including Criminal Records Bureau checks, providing references, an interview and acceptance procedure by the staff team.

The changes being introduced by the Independent Safeguarding Authority in 2009 will hopefully go some way towards addressing the ‘portability’ difficulties experienced by valuable volunteers like Esther’s son, Joshua.

Gracia continued, “We are not surprised to hear about the research on successful children from deprived backgrounds that Esther refers to. Someone outside their immediately family, who cares about them and praises them when they succeed, can make a huge difference. Our mentors often provide this vital function for our children.”

Chance UK mentors invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen

In celebration of five years of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, previous winners were invited to Buckingham Palace to a reception hosted by the Queen. As one of the 2006 winners, Chance UK was invited to send two mentors to represent the organisation.

Here is Perry and Fabian's story:

'May I say what a fantastic time was had by all.Walking through the gates, passing through lavish halls and rooms (plenty of bubbly)'. Meeting the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh was such an overwhelming experience that will last a lifetime, said Chance UK mentor, Perry Stephenson who attended the event. "I was fortunate enough to speak to The Queen about Chance UK.

A great moment for Fabian and myself happened towards the end. We were talking and were interrupted by Princess Anne. She was so down to earth it was amazing. She said she was sorry she couldn't mentor!

She was definitely the hightlight of the night. She was approachable and seemed to have a genuine interest in mentoring' said Fabian.

May I again take this opportunity to thank all of you at Chance UK to allow me to mentor and the opportunity for the Queen to meet me' (from Perry).

On the 18th of September 2008, officers from Hackney Borough Police, together with staff from Hackney council and the Crown Prosecution Service will undertake a huge challenge to raise at least Pound30,000 for Kickz football Foundation and Chance UK, both local charities supporting young people in Hackney, as well as for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Their fundraising page tells us more:

"We will run a non-stop relay from Hackney, via Marble Arch to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where we will get on our bicycles and again, in non-stop relay, ride all the way to the Mediterranean. A total of 1,266 Kilometres will be covered and the goal is to achieve this in just four days.

The local charities we're supporting have a proven track record of helping young people change the direction of their lives."

To make a donation to our fantastic fundraisers, just click here.

Many thanks for your support.

The lucky winners travelled to the stadium on a specially arranged train, and were given tickets to sit in the corporate hospitality end at the famous stadium. They watched and cheered as Portsmouth won 1-0 and lifted the FA Cup for the first time in 69 years.

The tickets were kindly donated by Peter Hughes of Danske Bank, to whom the children and mentors sent a thank you card and a photo of them all waving their flags and singing - all mentors agreed they had never seen the children so excited!

The following is a review of the book Wee Pals by Morrie Turner, written by a Chance UK child called Joel, aged nine.

One of the goals he has been working on with his mentor Chi is to write a book review and have it published on Chance UK's website.

So congratulations to Joel for achieving his goal and writing such a fantastic review.

---

About Morrie Turner

Morrie Turner, one of the few black American comic artists made his debut during world war two. His illustrations appeared in Stars and Stripes, the magazine of the American airforce. After the war, he started working for Oakland Police. At the same time, he created the comic Baker Helpers. In 1965, Morrie started his famous series Wee Pals about a group of children from various cultural backgrounds. The series was a big success and has been syndicated by several syndicates. While working on his famous series Morrie Turner drew soul corner along with his wife Letha, as well as an illustrated biography of Martin Luther King entitled “Prophet of Peace”.

What I think of Wee Pals

I think Wee Pals is good for adults, children and even senior citizens because it helps you to learn about your history and know who you are, it also helps you to learn about black history because that’s what the book is based on.

Wee Pals tells you about your own blood, it helps you to understand about black people, what life was like before they put their foot down and put an end to all this misery.

I think wee pals is very good and Morrie Turner black American comic artist is a strong black man and understood what life was like so that’s why he made Wee Pals, for people to read a short book and understand a lot about our own history and encourage people to live as one.

Once upon a time, on Thursday 3rd January, I went on a trip to London Zoo with Victoria, my mentor!

We saw lots of animals, like Queenie the pig and Shaun the sheep - but there was also a big cat that kept showing me its teeth every time I went near the cage. The best part was when I interviewed Veronica, a zoo keeper, and got to hold an animal like a coati.

The coati was so fidgety and sneaky a bit like me! It had a really long tail and a pointy nose - it eats worms, snails and slugs, a bit like Victoria!

Only joking! A big thank you to Veronica and Chance UK.

To honour the work Paul has done for Chance UK, staff hosted a farewell night at Paul’s local pub, the Coach and Horses in Farringdon. Friends, family and former Chance UK staff were there to join in the celebrations. The pub’s chef prepared food especially for Paul, and the new Chair, Geoff Broomhead, kicked off the speeches by saying Paul was going to be a hard act to follow. Paul also received a graduation certificate listing some of his many achievements, just as hundreds of Chance UK children have over the years. Taking this new role very seriously, he even knelt down to receive it!

Chance UK would also like to say a special thanks to Paul’s wife, Sue, who has attended many graduation ceremonies over the years. Her warmth, generosity and support for the programme will never be forgotten.

We would like to publicly thank Paul for everything he has helped Chance UK, and the children we work with, to achieve.
