What we're looking for
We are looking for volunteers who have a genuine interest in mentoring children. No particular background or experience is required; however, successful applicants will possess the following qualities:
> a clear, sensitive and friendly style of communication;
> an ability to get on well with children;
> a sense of responsibility and common sense;
> excellent listening skills and patience;
> warmth, enthusiasm and a sense of humour;
> reliability, self-motivation and tenacity.
To become a Chance UK mentor, you need to be able to commit to meeting the child once a week for a year. So consider whether you are planning to go travelling, get a promotion that means you have to work longer hours or just whether you can fit it around any other commitments you may have.
Our mentors also need to be available for monthly supervision sessions with a member of Chance UK staff at our offices. These last for an hour, and provide mentors with support and ideas that enhance the effectiveness of the mentoring relationship.
