Free activities
Here's a few activites you can do for free, with many of them not needing a particular location.
12 things
Identify 12 items you might find around the child’s local area (green cars, a man with a hat). Make a list, and you go round the area finding them, ticking them off and taking a picture.
Football golf
Decide on a number of spots in the park, such as a tree, sign, bench, etc. The child has to kick the ball to each in the smallest number of kicks.
Crossbar challenge
Instead of scoring penalties, aim to hit the crossbar with the football.
Races
For energetic children, time them racing round a particular distance e.g. from the bench to the fence in the park. See if they can beat their personal best!
The Explorer’s Game
A series of envelopes with special tasks for you both to explore Finsbury Park. Contact your Programme Manager to borrow the game, or you and the child could make up your own.
Games from the goody bags
Your mentoring goody bag is full of games for you to play with your child no matter where you are.
Listen to records in record shops
Many record shops allow you to listen their music on big headphones. Ensure the music is age appropriate though!
Funfairs
A guide to the best funfairs to visit in London.
Making a kite
How to make a paper kite.
Scrapbook
A scrapbook is a great record of your mentoring year. Buy one from a craft shop and fill it with photos, tickets of the activities you’ve done, and drawings, then leave the rest free for positive feedback for your child.
Jokes
Look online for child friendly jokes or find a joke book to make each other laugh.

Distorting photos
Many computers have programmes that allow you to take your photos and distort them, a source of hilarity for many children.
Comparison of London football clubs
A good long term project can be documenting and comparing the locations, history and achievements of London’s various football clubs.
Sharing games
Any games like cards, Rock Paper Scissory, dominoes or chess are good to help the child learn to take turns and play fair.
Positive feedback
Take turns to give each other genuine compliments and see how long you can go on…
Storytelling
Retell your favourite story or ask your Programme Manager about solution focused story telling.
Dead or alive
Ask each other what fictional and famous people (dead or alive) you would like have at your birthday party.
Desert Island
Find out what the other can’t live without and would take to a desert island, like food, music and games.
