Erick

Erick mentored with us in 2020 and has some great advice for future mentors.

What is your professional background?

Installation Engineer (audio visual)

Why did you decide to become a mentor?

I have had a positive effect and good feedback from my nephews and nieces. I felt that I could use that experience and energy with a mentee.

What skills did you gain through your mentoring role?

I learned patience and introspection as well as making sure that I always listened to my mentee.

Why do you think it’s important to become a mentor?

I feel it is important to give back and mentoring is a great way to learn new skills. By challenging yourself you then realise the enjoyment of seeing your mentee learn and express themselves.

What was your favourite memory from mentoring?

Seeing the confidence of my mentee grow and watching him interact with others. Me making a fool of myself whilst trying to skateboard!

What’s your top 3 tips for future mentors?

  1. Be open minded
  2. Listen
  3. Above all, be consistent and time conscious

What advice would you give to your 10 year old self?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
