Izzah mentored with us back in 2019-2020 and has some great advice for future mentors!

What is your professional background?

Delivery Manager

Why did you decide to become a mentor?

I feel there’s something brilliant about being able to positively influence the next generation, especially if you’ve reached a position of ‘privilege’. I’ve personally faced a lot of challenges growing up and feel like I can relate to the young people I work with.

I also love being able to help young people overcome personal challenges: there’s something deeply fulfilling about this that I don’t experience from my corporate job.

What skills did you gain through your mentoring role?

Personable leadership, forward planning, risk management, organisational skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills and empathy.

What are your top 3 tips for future mentors?

  1. Actively listen to show you understand any struggles and can sympathise
  2. Have solutions or at least a positive outlook if you don’t have any immediate answers
  3. Be enthusiastic and authentic – young people have a very strong energy detector!

What advice would you give your 10 year old self?

Try not to be so shy and nervous
